Hounds of Moravian

Get to
Know Sokka

Sara Weidner Hansen ’18 and her husband, Shane Hansen ’18, have loved pugs their whole lives, and in the spring of 2023 they were ready to add their first “fur baby” to the family. They traveled two hours to Oxford, Pennsylvania, on Sara’s late father’s birthday, to meet Sokka. “All the signs were there,” says Sara. “It was just meant to be!”

If your dog had a theme song, what would it be? Avatar: The Last Airbender—he’s named after the character Sokka from the show.

What would be your dog’s favorite space on campus? The quad behind Comenius. He loves exploring outside, and there is so much to sniff out there.

What one word best describes your dog? Serious. He takes everything so seriously. Even during playtime, he’s very focused and no-nonsense. It’s pretty uncharacteristic for pugs, who are normally big goofballs.

In what special way have you pampered your dog? We bought him a dog stroller to take him out with us if we’re gone for a full day or multiple hours at a time. Pugs, being brachycephalic, don’t do well with exercise or lots of physical activity, and he’s 20 pounds, so we can’t carry him in a doggy backpack all day. Baby stroller it is. He gets sooo much attention whenever he’s out in it.

What major would your dog choose as an undergrad or graduate student at Moravian? Marketing, but with a sales focus. He’s very vocal and stubborn—doesn’t take no for an answer—so I feel like he’d be great at selling things to people.

What is your dog’s favorite toy, food, or activity? Anything with a rope for playing tug-of-war. He also loves crinkle toys with squeakers. As for food, he goes nuts for apples!

What is something your dog taught you? That patience and understanding are key in caring for another living being. It’s given us just the smallest glimpse into parenthood. Since having him in our lives, we’ve also begun to be more present in the moment and take each day as it comes. You only have so much time with your pets, and it’s important to treasure every moment.
